Many HVAC Techs struggle when it comes to electrical controls, diagrams and troubleshooting costing extra time and money. It is easy for Technicians to become frustrated over time because they want to solve the customer's problem quickly and do it right the first time. Along with the frustration comes a lack of confidence that “haunts” the technician keeping them from reaching their optimum potential. UTA’s HVAC Electrical course takes the “mystery” out of electricity enabling students to gain not only the theory behind electrical controls but the confidence to succeed! Each student works individually so regardless of experience, they progress at their own rate. A low student to instructor ratio allows each technician to receive adequate “one on one” training necessary for the best lab experience. Students will spend approximately 1/3 of their time in Lecture learning theory and 2/3 of their time in lab performing hands-on projects. When Technicians return to work they are able to put what they have learned into action and an increase in productivity and efficiency is the result. When combined with the Refrigeration Technology Course beginning students are expected to have the ability to run residential maintenance. Electrical Topics Covered: 1. Safe electrical work practices 2. Electrical theory, laws, inductive & resistive loads. 3. Electrical Troubleshooting, reading diagrams & understanding low voltage transformers and controls. 4. Air conditioner, furnace & heat pump controls and wiring. 5. Understanding the residential home wiring system. 6. Branch circuit design and wire sizing for HVAC equipment. 7. Motor theory and application with compressors, capacitors and starting controls. 8. Time saving diagnostics that gets right to the problem. 9. Troubleshooting on fully functional HVAC equipment. 10. Effective methods of customer communication regarding their current HVAC problem. The education and performance expectations listed below are based on each student’s individual knowledge, experience and dedication to learning. Beginning (Novice) Techs:
Intermediate Techs:
1.Advance from Maintenance to Service performance. 2.Advance from Install to Maintenance and diagnostic performance. 3.Improved diagnostic skills and efficiency. 4.Increased understanding of theory
Skilled Techs
1.Easily cut diagnostic times in half 2.Reduced recalls & warranty work 3.Increased billable hours 4.Accurately diagnose difficult problems without replacing unnecessary parts.
